Mammography is a specialized imaging technique that uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images of the breast tissue. It is primarily used for screening and diagnosing breast cancer and other abnormalities in the breast. Mammograms help detect potential issues early, even before symptoms appear.
A mammography technologist performs mammographic exams, including screening and diagnostic mammograms. They operate mammography equipment to capture high-quality images of the breast tissue, position patients properly, and ensure that images meet diagnostic standards. They also work closely with radiologists to assist in interpreting the results.
To become a mammography technologist, you typically need to complete an accredited radiologic technology program and obtain certification as a radiologic technologist (RT). Specialized training in mammography is then required, which can be obtained through additional coursework, clinical experience, and certification from professional organizations like the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
The duration of the Mammography Tech program can vary. Generally, it takes about 6-12 months to complete the mammography certification program after obtaining initial radiologic technology certification. The program includes both classroom instruction and clinical training.
