Out-of-State Enrollment: AAS in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and AAS in MRI Technology

Stellar Career College in Crown Point, Indiana, offers its Associate of Applied Science degrees in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technology to residents of eligible states. You complete your coursework virtually, complete labs through simulation or on-campus residency sessions, and complete your clinical externship in person at an SCC-affiliated healthcare facility in your state of residence.

Program Format: Two Options

Transfer credit: eligible general education credits may transfer if they meet SCC’s transfer credit requirements, which may reduce your total program credits and tuition. Core courses must be taken at SCC. All transfer credit must be applied before the program begins; applications are not accepted after the program starts.

Clinical Externship Placement

The clinical externship is required. Where you complete it, and who secures the site, depends on where you live.

If you must secure your own site:

• The facility where you complete your 4-hour clinical observation is often a good candidate for your externship site.
• The Externship Department guides you and the facility through the affiliation agreement process. Allow several weeks for completion.
• All affiliated sites remain under college oversight and evaluation.

What to expect during clinicals:

• Externship quarters require 12 to 24 clinical hours per week at the assigned facility, typically during daytime business hours, alongside scheduled online coursework.
• Rotations may include early mornings, extended hours, travel, and strict attendance expectations.
• You must remain fully available for your assigned externship schedule during each externship quarter.
• Declining the clinical site offered to you is considered non-compliance with the program’s clinical obligations and results in an Administrative Hold.

Clinical Clearance Before You Start

Requirements vary by clinical site and may include:

• Criminal background check
• Drug screening
• Immunization records and titers
• Physical examination clearance
• Current AHA BLS Provider CPR certification
• Proof of current health insurance coverage
• Additional site-specific requirements

Important: Failure to maintain clinical clearance, including all required documentation, may result in removal from the clinical site and inability to complete clinical coursework. Students are responsible for costs associated with externship requirements.

Your Admissions Path

Follow these stages in order. Your application is complete only after you finish the clinical observation.

1. Apply and attend orientationSubmit the online application, then attend the mandatory Orientation Session.
2. Complete the online assessmentsComplete the Entrance Exam, Digital Literacy Assessment, and Distance Education Assessment. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher are exempt from the Entrance Exam.
3. Build your admission fileSubmit the required documents, add any optional healthcare certifications, and get estimates and payment plan information from the Financial Aid Department.
4. Complete the clinical observationSpend at least 4 hours observing in a Sonography Department (DMS applicants) or MRI Department (MRI applicants). The supervising technologist completes and signs the Clinical Observation Evaluation Form and provides contact information.
5. Confirm your clinical placementPlacement requirements depend on your state of residence (see Clinical Externship Placement above).
6. Interview and complete enrollmentAttend the Program Director interview, receive and sign your acceptance documents, and receive onboarding instructions.
